Germany | North Frisian Islands : Sylt

North Frisian Islands are located along the northwest border of Germany. This chain of islets is slowly dissolved by the strong tides of the North Sea. Sylt is the star of these islets, abounding in great sandy beaches, luxury accommodations, restaurants and hotels attracting numerous tourists. However, Sylt used to be at least 300m wider than it is now. The strong tides have slowly eroded its coastline. It is known that about a few hundred meters off the current coastline there is an underwater settlement Eidum. It is believed that this settlement was built some time in 1300s and rebuilt several times. In 1436 there was a terrible flood that killed a lot of people, forcing the survived to move to higher ground. From 1800s the remains of Eidum can still be seen hundreds of years later at low tide.
