Description

Reclaimed in 1774, the area of Ghirlanda was once completely occupied by marshes. In 1902 the Massa Marittima-Follonica railway line was inaugurated, connecting the Massa Marittima mines to the port for the transport of iron, pyrite and coal. At the beginning of the twentieth century the railway network was extended to the town of Follonica and passenger transport was also provided. In 1944 the railway, of which today only the old station remains, was definitively closed.
In Ghirlanda, right in the area of the old station, on 1 September each year there is the traditional Livestock Fair.
