The glass and steel construction, designed by Spanish architect Guillermo Vasquez Consuegra, gives a new look to the oldest building in the Darsena, once the Arsenal of the Republic of Genoa where galleys were built, armed and launched.
Opened in 2004, the year of Genoa European Capital of Culture, today Galata is the largest maritime museum in the Mediterranean, innovative and technological.
The visitor, walking through the 4 floors of the building made of stone and crystal, makes a journey through the centuries, from the age of rowing ships to sailing ships and the great ocean crossing of Italian migrants on board steamships to America, Brazil and Argentina. Six thousand original objects are exhibited in the twenty-three rooms of the Galata, for a full immersion in the history of navigation.
