Frosolone, the town of knives

In the province of Isernia there is a very interesting town to visit. We are talking about Frosolone, known as the city of knives. Here, in fact, you can visit the Museum of cutting irons. Frosolone was already a well-known centre of excellence for the production of knives at the time of the Kingdom of Naples. The centre developed when Charles of Bourbon, King of the Two Sicilies, wanted to give an industrial structure to his kingdom, favouring the reorganisation of foundries and armaments: the craftsmen were forced to convert their production, choosing the path of domestic cutlery and artistically decorating this type of tools. In a short time the steel working industry became flourishing and the products were exported out of the region all over Europe. However, the art of forging in Frosolone has much more remote origins. Some sources date this ancient tradition back to the 6th century, when the Lombards, a notoriously militarized people, arrived in southern Italy. In the town you can also set out to discover the Collemeluccio Reserve, a natural area declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
