Pain-au-chocolat is also called chocolatine, especially south of the Loire, petit pain in northern France, or couque au chocolat in Belgium (only in Brussels). Pain au chocolat is a square-shaped puff pastry cake rolled up on two bars of chocolate. Pain au chocolat, or Saccottini with chocolate, is immediately followed by croissants, the best-known and most popular breakfast cakes in France. It is a dessert prepared with croissant pastry (pastry brioche puffed with butter), in the shape of a small bag and with pieces (bars) of dark chocolate inside.
