In 1897 the aqueduct was built for the city of Porto San Giorgio, and, to celebrate the important event, it was decided to ask Alfonso Bernardini to create a sculpture that would celebrate forever such an important work for all citizens. In the upper part of the entire sculpture, placed above a globe, a majestic female figure stands (an allegory of democracy) holding a pomegranate in her right hand and ears of corn in her left hand, symbols of fertility and abundance respectively.
