Florence: The Sasso di Dante and its famous memory

In Piazza delle Pallottole, near Via dello Studio, to the right of the apse of the Duomo, a large boulder is deposited on a sidewalk, near a doorway of a building. A plaque recalls that it is (would be?): "the real Sasso di Dante". In today’s square, between two shops, a marble slab is still visible with the following inscription: "Sasso di Dante". In fact, history (legend?) tells us that in that place, at that time a still green open space, Dante used to stop and sit on a stone to rest, think and observe the construction works of the Cathedral. The Sasso is also linked to an anecdote in which the Supreme Poet and his famous memory are the protagonists. One day, while he was absorbed in his thoughts, sitting on the usual stone, an acquaintance passed by and, approaching him, asked the poet: "Oh Dante, what do you like best to eat?" – "The egg" – Dante replied. The following year, the same curious person, passed by again and seeing Dante still sitting in his favorite place and always absorbed, approached him again and asked: "with what?" – "With salt!" was the poet’s prompt reply.
