The drink Strega is also linked to these legends, a yellow liquor from Benevento. It is one of the oldest liquors in Italy, can be used as a digestif or to accompany dessert and has been met with acclaim all over the world. The story of the Strega brand began in the 20th century with advertising graphics and posters from Marcello Dudovich and the futurist painter Fortunato Depero. It is also a cinematic icon: the distinctive yellow bottle has starred in such celebrated movies as Kitty Foyle (Sam Wood, 1940), Obsession (Luchino Visconti, 1943) and Bread and Tulips by Soldini (2000). You can take a trip to the plant where Strega has been produced since 1860, following a recipe passed down by the Alberti family through the generations. Discover the working processes and the history of the company in the Spazio Strega (part of the Italian Museimpresa network) and visit the herbalist’s, where you can let your senses take charge: it is a cacophony of fragrances and colors. You can also look forward to tasting sessions and a bizarre collection (400 bottles) of failed counterfeits from around the world. Maybe you’ll be the one to work out its secret. More importantly, did you manage to detect the hint of saffron? And did you recognize the mint or the cinnamon?
