Dumfries: Caerlaverock Castle

Caerlaverock Castle is a moated triangular castle first built in the 13th century. It is located on the southern coast of Scotland. The important ruins of Caerlaverock, surrounded by ditches and earthen ramparts, stand in a pleasant green landscape on the north coast of the Solway estuary. This fearsome medieval fortress (13th century) has a not uninteresting interior façade (1634) (note the windows and door pediments enriched with heraldic or mythological sculptures). It is an early example of Scottish Renaissance style.
