The Red Fortress – the heart of King’s Landing – is truly located in the Lovrijenac Fortress on the border of Dubrovnik. Curiosity: in the entrance there is an ancient inscription that can be translated as "Freedom is not sold even for all the gold in the world". Perhaps it is a secret detail of who was in charge of the filming? Well, maybe the Lannister way of doing things may not be the best after all.
In order to avoid confusion, the scenes of the Red Fortress from the first season were shot in Malta, but from the next season onwards it was decided to move the filming group to Croatia, so that we could have more outdoor locations like Dubrovnik and Lovrijenac Fortress. The bay right in front of the Fortress was used for the scene of the Battle of Black Waters.
