On the stretch of coastline between the beach of Fontania and the cove before the beach of Forty Remi is the Pozzo del Diavolo, which in Gaeta is also known as the Pozzo delle Chiavi.
It is a large cave that develops both above the surface of the sea, with an entrance where a small boat can pass, and underwater.
Regarding the origin of the name there are several stories:
on a popular level it is thought that it is called the Devil’s Well because after the death of Christ, the Devil found shelter in the cave leaving an opening to hell.
Others believe that "Devil’s Well" can be linked to the discovery in a corner of the cave of a sculpture on the rock, depicting a devilish face.
As for the name "Well of the keys", the belief goes that the husbands betrayed by their wives went to throw the keys of their homes in the waters of the cave, and for this reason it took its name.
Above the surface of the sea, an area in the rock suddenly opens up and sinks back into the salt water, only after a 50-metre drop; below the sea surface, instead, the depth is only a few metres and it is the site of a cavernicolous and precavernicolous underwater life.
