Not far from the crowded beaches of Salento, Corigliano d’Otranto is a village in the so-called Grecìa Salentina, a linguistic island where an ancient Greek language, griko, is spoken. What will you find in the village? A very well preserved historical centre, first of all: a beautiful walk among churches, houses, palaces, military architecture – there is also a castle, the Castello de’ Monti, with a fascinating richly decorated facade. Stop and admire the rose window and the mosaics of the mother church of St. Nicholas. And then look for the "patriarch" of Corigliano: it is a monumental vallonea oak, a species endemic in the eastern Mediterranean that in Italy is only found in central-southern Apulia. It can be found on leaving the town towards via Moncenisio.
