Conero Park | Sirolo

Set in the greenery of the Conero Park and overlooking the beautiful beaches of the Riviera, stands Sirolo, an ancient medieval village. Sirolo is the blue of the sea, of the Blue Flags waving on its beaches, of the clear sky of sunny days. Sirolo has its roots in the distant prehistory, a period in which the Piceno civilization developed, today testified by the finds preserved in the archaeological area "I Pini", located in the outskirts of Sirolo, just before the hamlet of Coppo. The etymology of the name of the city probably dates back to 560 A.D., coming from Sirius, leader in the retinue of Belisarius, to whom this territory is attributed after the victory over the Goths. In the Middle Ages, to defend itself from the raids of barbarians and pirates, Sirolo acquired its identity as a fortified fortress, with a trellis-like road system, alleys and towers. A feud of the Cortesi Counts (11th century), nobles of Franco-Germanic origin, it was ceded in 1225 to Ancona; the same Cortesi already in 1038 gave the Benedictines the abbey at the top of the mountain, today the church of San Pietro and the surrounding land. An impregnable castle, it later became the property of the Papal State, under whose domination the churches of San Nicolò and Rosario were founded. Remarkable the three villas, all private and visitable only from outside.
