The Civic Museum "Lo Spielberg d’Irpinia" is located in the former Bourbon prison of Montefusco, originally, the building was a castrum with a quadrangular plan built in the Lombard period. During the Norman, Swabian, Aragonese and Angevin domination the structure (of defensive character) was enlarged and strengthened.
Over time it underwent several transformations and adaptations. It was used as the Court of the Royal Provincial Hearing of the Principality of Ultra by the Aragonese. In 1851 Ferdinand II of Bourbon transformed the structure into a political prison for anti-Bourbon people. The cruelty and atrocities practiced in the prison became famous throughout the region. For this reason it was defined the "Spielberg of Irpinia". From 1877 to 1923 the structure became a district prison.
