The Civic Archaeological Museum of Canosa houses about 2000 archaeological finds from excavations in Canosa and in tombs from the 5th – 3rd century BC. There are inscriptions, sculptures, bas-reliefs, marble, coins, jewellery, ceramics and vases dating back to a vast span of time of about 1500 years (from the 6th – 5th century B.C. to the 9th – 10th century B.C.): from prehistoric, Daunian, Roman, early Christian and Byzantine-Medieval.
In the past the Museum has been deprived of some priceless pieces, such as the oriental prections of the tomb of the Ori. These jewels are currently kept at the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto, and scattered in the major Italian and European museums (including the Louvre in Paris).
