Recently è has been included in the prestigious group of "I Borghi più belli d’Italia";. The origins of the town, located at the northern end of the province of Pescara, although uncertain, seem to date back to the Vestini era. During the Carboneria period it distinguished itself for demonstrations of independence, which culminated in the outbreak of a brief insurrectional movement against the government of Joachim Murat.
The historic center, set on a very scenic hill, 320 m. above sea level, è rich in monuments, among which is the stupendous Collegiate Church of St. Michael Archangel, with its spectacular 15th-century portico, and has numerous examples of fine civil architecture. It still preserves in excellent condition some of the ancient gateways.
