Some of Cagliari’s most important museums are located in Castello, on the premises of the modern museum center known as the Citadel of Museums. In this complex of buildings, built in the 1970s on the area that once housed the Royal Arsenal, are the Archaeological Museum, the National Picture Gallery, the "Susini" Anatomical Wax Collection and the "Stefano Cardu" Civic Museum of Oriental Art; temporary exhibitions and other cultural events are also organized. The Citadel is accessed through an imposing 19th-century gate, overlooking Arsenal Square.
