The Church of San Lorenzo was built and designed with the birth of the village of Porto Rotondo, by sculptors Andrea Cascella and Mario Ceroli, it is accessed by a solemn staircase, formed by 35 steps, which unites in a single architectural complex the Church and Piazza San Marco. At the entrance we find the megalithic cross and inside the altar, both entirely made of granite, both works by the sculptor Andrea Cascella. The interior of the church has the shape of an overturned ship’s hull with thousands of figures, shaped in Russian pine wood, made by the sculptor Mario Ceroli and representing historical characters of PortoRotondo. They depict details such as the world of youth, the tree of life, the last supper, the flight into Egypt and the Last Judgment. In 2008/2009 the Church of San Lorenzo was completed thanks to the commitment of the newly founded Fondazione PortoRotondo with its members and the important contribution of the Consortium. The last works, also realized by Ceroli, were: the bell tower, the portal and the stained-glass window with the deposition of Christ, the south facade with its rose window made in Murano and, among the capitals, the dedication to San Lorenzo carved in the grey granite of Sardinia. Moreover, the paving of the small square, south facade of the Church, adorned with the marble profiles of the last six Pontiffs: Pius XII (Pacelli), John XXIII (Roncalli), Paul VI (Montini), John Paul I (Luciani), John Paul II (Wojtyla), Benedict XVI (Ratzinger).
