Herrenchiemsee Castle – was built by King Ludwig II from 21 May 1878 onwards in a magnificent location: the castle stands on an island in Lake Chiemsee, the Herreninsel, and can be reached by ferry from the village of Prien. The Herreninsel, the Island of Men, is so called because it housed a convent of Augustinian Canons and contrasts with the nearby Fraueninsel, the Island of Women, which still houses a community of Benedictine nuns. The untimely death of the forty-year-old sovereign on 13 June 1886 in circumstances never clarified in Lake Starnberg did not allow the project to be completed. Today Herrenchiemsee consists only of the main building.
