The Burnham Pavilions were two distinct temporary works of architecture, built in Chicago’s Millennium Park in 2009 to mark the centennial of the urban plan designed by the American architect Daniel Burnham; the design of one of the two pavilions was entrusted to Zaha Hadid Architects, the other to the Dutch firm UNStudio. While the space designed by UNStudio played on visual and physical permeability, and was totally open on its perimeter, the pavilion conceived by Zaha Hadid was conceived as a place to venture into, similar to an enormous cocoon or pod.
