One of the most important buildings in this sense is the Rocca Malatestiana, built in Cesena at the behest of Galeotto I Malatesta between 1380 and 1477 on the ashes of the previous Rocca Vecchia, which in turn was built near the site where the Rocca Antica stood.
The Rocca Malatestiana maintained its status as a military fortress until Napoleon’s descent into Italy, and at the end of the 18th century it was gradually transformed into a prison, only to be regained by the Municipality in 1970. Today it houses the Historical Museum of Agriculture inside the Female Tower, and over the years, thanks to various restorations, it has been possible to make different sections of the fortress accessible to tourists, such as the Male Tower, the internal walkways and the ramparts.
