Celano Gorge Aielli

Really very beautiful hike, in an unusual environment as can be that of a canyon, with very high walls that reach a distance of really a few meters from each other.In its most characteristic part almost 200 m high and only 3 m wide. There are no great difficulties: however, the presence of large boulders makes a significant section of the walk challenging. To be done with little water or in its complete absence: absolutely to be avoided during rainy seasons or during spring when the thaw is still in progress. The elevation difference from the start to the Lovers’ Spring is about 300 meters, for a time needed of about 2 hours to walk it plus breaks. The trail enters the gorge crossing its various microclimates present. Thus, from a sparse coniferous forest in the initial part, we move on to other stretches where ferns alternate with deciduous and large hazelnut trees; other stretches are instead characterized by the only large scree that serves as a bed for the stream, which is certainly raging in the rainy season. In the most spectacular part, with the walls stretching towards each other and barely allowing sunlight to penetrate, sounds of rock birds can be heard: eagles also nest here. Arrival at the Lovers’ Spring is an opportunity for a break in the dense forest, to the sound of the stream, in the heart of one of the most spectacular and unexpected settings in the Apennines. Directions: From Ovindoli take the paved road leading to Valle d’Arano. After passing the locality Acqua delle Fate, the road enters the Valle d’Arano. At the end of the asphalt road (about three kilometers from Ovindoli) park at the Ponticello di Valle d’Arano (elevation c. 1335). Follow the dirt road skirting the valley on the right. Then follow the signs for the Celano Gorges;
