Under the high cusped bell tower (second in height in Italy only to the Torrazzo of Cremona), the Cathedral of S. Pietro reveals neoclassical forms, designed in 1875-79 by Edoardo Arboreo Mella from Vercelli. The interior contains precious works of sacred art: in the right aisle you can admire a 15th century wooden Crucifix, a 14th century panel (Madonna dell’Uscetto) and a venerated wooden group (Beata Vergine della Salute) dating back to the end of the following century. The ambulatory houses some busts by the Genoese Filippo Parodi (17th century), who also painted the group with St. Joseph and Child in the left aisle. Without forgetting the six paintings by Moncalvo placed in the chapel of the Immaculate and in the sacristy.
That bizarre sculpture that can be noticed at the left corner of the temple, represents Gagliaudo, the hero of a famous episode known by all the inhabitants.
Inside the Cathedral we observe the painting with Pope Alexander III receiving the keys of Alexandria. And there they are up there the 24 patrons of the 24 cities, expressed in statues in the dome of the Church.
