Situated in a dominant position over the wide valley of the Orba, and therefore coveted for its strategic position and easy defence, the castle was built in successive phases, starting from the beginning of the 13th century, around the majestic circular watchtower. Included in the feud of the Marquis of Monferrato, it subsequently passed to the Marquises of Gavi and, in 1431, to Gian Galeazzo Trotti, captain of fortune of the Visconti family, lords of Milan.
The transformation of the building into an aristocratic residence began with the Trotti family from Alessandria, a transformation continued by the Grimaldi family, patricians from Genoa, owners of the fief from 1570 and completed by them at the end of the 18th century with the majestic western facade, the chapel decorated with trompe l’oeil and the hanging garden, recently restored and included in the list of historic gardens in Piedmont.
