Description

Near Piazza Sant’Oronzo stands the Castle of Lecce, also known as the Castle of Charles V, because today it looks like what it is thanks to the will of the Habsburg emperor. The king, in fact, in 1539, transformed the medieval bulwark into a real military fortress, able to resist the fierce attacks by the Turks. What made it impregnable was the talent of Gian Giacomo dell’Acaja, the chief engineer of the Kingdom of Naples. Since 2010 it has housed the Papier-mâché Museum.
