Good food and good wine, especially at Tenuta Castelbuono, 30 hectares of vineyards in the municipalities of Bevagna and Montefalco, in the province of Perugia. We are in the Umbrian estate of the prestigious Lunelli family, wine producers for generations, who together with the famous Italian architect and goldsmith Arnaldo Pomodoro had the intuition to create the Carapace, a work of contemporary art perfectly integrated into the environment, among the vineyards, a treasure trove of great wines such as Sagrantino and Rosso di Montefalco. The first sculpture in the world with an internal wine cellar where you can drink is located in this corner of Umbria all to discover.

Fascinated by an ancient and almost mystical land such as Umbria and by a wine of extraordinary power and longevity such as Sagrantino, the Lunelli family acquired Tenuta Castelbuono, 30 hectares of vineyards in the communes of Bevagna and Montefalco, in 2001. Efforts were initially concentrated on the vineyards, now converted to organic farming, with new plantings and the enhancement of the existing ones through an articulated project of clonal selection. In 2003 Montefalco Sagrantino was born, followed the next year by Montefalco Rosso.
There was a need, however, for a new winery and the Lunelli family, by virtue of a solid and old friendship with Arnaldo Pomodoro, one of the greatest contemporary artists, proposed to him to realize it. The Maestro accepted with enthusiasm and after the first inspection he had already imagined the project.
The "Carapace" – as Pomodoro wanted to call the winery – took a good six years of work and was inaugurated and opened to the public, for visits and tastings, in June 2012. It is a unique work that challenges the boundaries between sculpture and architecture. It is the first sculpture in the world in which people live and work, a unique work in which art and nature, sculpture and wine dialogue, underlining the exceptional nature of both the container and the content. It offers itself to the eye as a large dome covered in copper, engraved with cracks that recall the furrows of the earth that embraces it. A sculptural element in the form of a red dart sticking out of the ground underlines the work in the landscape. Entering the "Carapace" means going into a sculpture by Pomodoro, as you immediately notice his artistic alphabet, immediately recognizable in the inner vault. A shape reminiscent of the turtle, a symbol of stability and longevity that, with its carapace represents the union between earth and sky".
In short, an art cellar for art wines.
