Guglielmo il Malo is responsible for the beginning of the works of Castel dell’Ovo. It was built on a previous fortification made by monks who in the past settled on the islet of the ‘Salvatore’. The sovereign had a large tower called ‘Normandy’ built, with a battlements and an antemural to protect the entrance. According to legend, the castle takes its name from the fact that Virgil had placed under the islet of Megaride, an egg locked in a cage. The fate of Naples would be in the hands of this egg, would remain safe only if it remains intact.
