Burggarten is a popular place for people who want to talk a stroll or just lounge around on the green grass on a blanket in the warmer months. Here you will find a beautiful memorial to Mozart, as well as a garden with some very colourful flowers. The Palmenhaus is a big glass palm house that you can visit on the northern end of the park. The Palmenhaus is actually a greenhouse located on the edge of the Burggarten. A first greenhouse was built between 1823 and 1826, designed by Ludwig von Remy, in neoclassical style: facing the Orangerie of Schönbrunn Palace, the back wall of the Palmenhaus was part of the city wall.
Demolished in 1901, a new glasshouse was built between 1902 and 1906 in Art Nouveau style by architect Friedrich Ohmann, while the central part was decorated by Josef Václav Myslbek.
Closed in 1988 for safety reasons, the Palmenhaus was restored between 1996 and 1998, when it was reopened. With a total area of 2,050 m², the central part is used as a restaurant, the left wing houses the Schmetterlinghaus, a butterfly petting zoo, and the right wing is used by the Austrian federal government as a greenhouse.
