Aragonese Castle or Alfonsino
Also known as the Red Castle, because of the vermilion colour of the stone, the Alfonsino Castle of Brindisi rises on the island of Sant’Andrea, at the entrance of the city port.
Born as a defensive outpost of the city, construction work was started in February 1481 by Ferrante of Aragon, who had a tower built to guard the port. A few years later Alfonso d’Aragona, Duke of Calabria, transformed this first defensive nucleus into a real castle.
The manor was built on a strip of land embraced by the sea where there was a Benedictine abbey, disappeared in the fifteenth century, dedicated to St. Andrew.
