Briatico, enchanting seaside resort in Calabria

Charming seaside resort famous for its seafront promenade overlooking the Gulf of Lamezia Terme and the Aeolian archipelago, Briatico is a succession of beaches, cliffs and bays, among the most beautiful in Calabria. We remember the beaches of Trainiti and Baia Safò, the cliff Cocca, the beaches of San Giuseppe and Sant’Irene, all located along the famous Coast of the Gods. The first certain evidence of the existence of Briatico dates back to the year 1000 when Roger the Norman, in a diploma concerning the foundation of the diocese of Miletus, mentioned the small town of Euriatikon (now Briatico). Following the Saracen raids the town was destroyed and later rebuilt on the hill to the right of the Murria river. The new town took the name of Briatikos (fortified place) and among the food and wine specialties there are olives, red onions, prickly pears, and dishes such as fish soup, swordfish and grilled tuna.
