When the city of Dallas wouldn’t allow the Timothy Oulton furniture store to install a giant bowler hat sculpture atop its now-defunct Knox Street store, the thing wound up on a 10-foot pole in an empty field in the Cedars. It was installed in 2013, a non sequitur come to life. The hat greets drivers as they exit the neighborhood onto interstates 30 and 45.
Designed by Keith Turman, the sculpture was commissioned by the British furniture brand, Timothy Oulton, as a real-life version of Oulton’s bowler hat logo. Composed of steel, wood, fiberglass, epoxy, and foam, it stands 10 feet tall and 20 feet wide.
However, no bowler is complete without a Stanley’s Umbrella. Just a few blocks away stands a 42-foot tall sculpture of an umbrella in the middle of Akard Street. It’s located in front of the Lorenzo Hotel.
