The thermal waters of Bormio are considered a true miracle of nature, in fact they reach a temperature between 37 and 41 degrees Celsius, but they spring from places almost perpetually covered by snow: the imposing dolomitic massif of the Ortles group.
There are nine springs: Pliniana, San Martino, Arciduchessa, Cassiodora, Zampillo dei Bambini, Ostrogoti, Nibelungi, San Carlo and Cinglaccia.
These thermal springs feed three establishments: the Bormio Thermal Baths, which are located in the municipality of Bormio, and the Bagni Vecchi complex and the Gran Hotel Bagni Nuovi, which are located in the nearby municipality of Valdidentro.
Already known in Roman times, the Baths of Bormio, are mentioned in a phrase by Pliny, when in "Naturalis Historia" he refers to the warm waters of the alpine resort.
Even more important is the letter of the writer Aurelio Cassiodoro, secretary of the Ostrogothic king Theodoric, who invited a nobleman of the time to go to the waters of Bormio for the important therapeutic virtues. It was in the 6th century A.D., more than 1500 years have passed, but these marvellous waters still maintain their healing properties intact and tourists who adore these places every year come here to spend relaxing holidays.
