Bordeaux was once called "The Sleeping Beauty” but pollution, cars and traffic had tarnished the natural radiance of this city. The city is built on a bend of the river Garonne, and is divided into two parts: the right bank to the east and left bank in the west. The city’s nicknames are “La perle d’Aquitaine” (The Pearl of Aquitaine), and “La Belle Endormie” (Sleeping Beauty) in reference to the old center.
