Located in Frangarto on the south-western edge of Bolzano, overlooking the river Adige, Castel Firmiano is considered one of the emblems of South Tyrol.
The original name Formigàr (from the Latin formicaria) derives from a historical fact that happened in 945. It is the oldest mention of a real South Tyrolean castle to date.
Since the beginning of the fortress of the bishop princes of Trento, it was purchased in the second half of the 15th century by Duke Sigismondo il Danaroso, Count of Tyrol, who transformed it into the largest and most prestigious of his castles and named it Sigmundskron (Sigismondo’s crown).
