Bogda Peak is situated in the area of Fukang City and 150kilometers away from Urumqi. Bogda Peak is the highest in the Bogda Ola Range, an eastern sub-range of the great Tianshan range. The Bogda Mountains, 150 miles long and averaging 13,000 feet elevation, culminate in a lofty two-mile ridge, topped by several peaks. Bogda Peak is the highest of these. Its altitude is 5445m.
The valleys on the southern side of the range are hot, dry, very windy, and comparatively treeless, while the northern foothills are densely covered in conifer forests.
Although it is dwarfed by the 7,000-metre-plus-high peaks in the main range of Tianshan Mountain, its proximity to the provincial capital Urumqi has made it popular among mountaineers.
