Bodo is also a city with an interesting history and architectural heritage. The city was founded as a trading village in the 18th century. However, it was only during the second half of the 19th century that the city began to develop as an important commercial and port center, thanks to the construction of the Nordland Southern Railway and the opening of the Bodo harbor. However, during World War II, Bodo was destroyed by German aerial bombing, but was later rebuilt. Therefore, it is a city with modern and functional architecture. Many of the historic buildings were destroyed during World War II, but there are still some buildings that date back to the pre-war period. One of the most prominent examples is the Bodo Church, built in 1956 and designed by Norwegian architect Odd Østbye.
