It was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1997 as one of the most architecturally sophisticated lighthouses built in the U.S. in the 19th century. The main tower is 67 feet high, with an octagonal granite base and a brick exterior, which rises to a cast iron parapet and an open gallery around the lantern chamber.
