From the Middle Ages, it was built as the residence of the Vicar of the Podestà, then passed into the ownership of the Opera di San Cerbone and finally became the bishop’s seat of the Diocese of Massa Marittima and Populonia in 1603. It is located on Piazza Garibaldi and the entrance opens onto the churchyard of the Cathedral of San Cerbone. The building underwent a big restoration at the beginning of the XX century. On a secondary wall, the one that faces the Fonti dell’Abbondanza, at the request of the then Bishop Comastri, in 1922 was executed the fresco of the sermon of San Bernardino, the painter Giampaolo Talani.
Outside the palace, at the base of the imposing staircase, you will notice a tall granite column, where public notices from the authorities used to be posted. At the top of the column, in 1474, a she-wolf was finally placed, the symbol of the city of Siena.
