Benbulben, a walk in Irish Green

Benbulbin is a large rock formation in County Sligo, Ireland. It is part of the Dartry Mountains, in an area sometimes called “Yeats Country“.

Benbulben has been the setting for many literary episodes: it is the scene of Diarmuid’s death in the saga of Fionn Mac Cumhaill. William Butler Yeats also found inspiration at the foot of this height.

“Under bare Ben Bulben’s head In Drumcliff churchyard Yeats is laid, an ancestor was rector there

Long years ago; a church stands near, By the road and ancient Cross. No marble, no conventional phrase, On limestone quarried near the spot By his command these words are cut: Cast a cold eye On life, on death. Horseman, pass by”

(Yeats, “Under Ben Bulben”, Last Poems, 1939)
