Banganga Tank is a sacred water reservoir, situated within the premises of the Walkeshwar Temple in Mumbai. It was constructed in AD 1127, under the patronage of a minister of the Silhara dynasty. The tank was destroyed during the Portuguese invasion but was rebuilt with the help of a donation by philanthropist Rama Kamath. The water in this tank is believed to have originated from the holy Ganges. As per legends, the water in this tank sprang when Lord Rama shot an arrow. This is how the reservoir derived its name, which is a combination of two words – Baan (arrow) and Ganga (the holy river).
