Artichoke Fountain – Naples

The Artichoke Fountain is a recent work. It was built in 1955 and inaugurated on 29 April of the following year by the then mayor Achille Lauro, but it was a stopgap. In the preliminary projects, the Fountain of Monteoliveto was to be transferred to Piazza Trieste e Trento, but when the Superior Council of Fine Arts rejected the hypothesis, Mayor Lauro entrusted the task of building a new fountain to the engineers Carlo Comite, Mario Massari and Fedele Federico. The structure consists of a large circular basin placed in the middle of a small garden.at the center of the main basin, a cup contains the water that gushes from a vase in the shape of a floral corolla and hence the nickname "Artichoke".
