Archaeological site of Nalanda ‘Mahavihara’ (University of Nalanda) in Nalanda, Bihar
Nalanda Mahavihara is located in the state of Bihar in northeast India. It includes the archaeological remains of a monastery school complex dating from the third century BC to the thirteenth century AD. The complex includes sidewalks, altars, vihara’s (residential and educational buildings) and important works of art in plaster, stone and metal. Nalanda is the oldest university in the Indian subcontinent where knowledge was passed down over a continuous period of 800 years. The historical development of the site bears witness to the development of Buddhism into a religion and the flourishing of educational and monastic traditions.
