The archaeological excavations of Stabia have brought to light a series of villas of the ancient city of Stabiae. The first excavations were ordered by King Charles III of Spain who asked to inspect the tunnels in search of precious objects to be exhibited in the Reggia di Portici. These excavations have returned the remains of a fortified village that in Roman times was used as a holiday resort. Villas rich in furnishings and paintings of inestimable value were found. Among the most famous paintings are the "Flora" and the "Seller of Amorini" from Villa Arianna. The finds of these excavations are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Naples and in the Antiquarium Stabiano.
