ancient city of Compsa, to which was attributed the statute of municipium ascribed to the Galeria tribe, appears in the testimony of the historian Livio who tells of his defection in favour of Hannibal in 216 B.C. and his reconquest, two years later, by Fabio Massimo.
The remains of the Roman city have resurfaced beneath the ruins of the modern town of Conza, which was almost completely destroyed by the 1980 earthquake. An excavation, restoration and valorisation project is bringing to light a complex building stratification that represents the palimpsest of over 2000 years of history.
