Appia Antica Regional Park The Via Appia was the first and most important road built in Rome, it was built at the end of the 4th century BC to connect the city with Capua. Its name comes from the consul Appius Claudius who had it built; as for the other consuls and in general for the areas outside the walls of Rome, as burials were forbidden inside the city, the street is dotted with funerary monuments.
