The city centre was really beautiful, with an enormous plaza surrounded by lovely colonial buildings, like the big pink cathedral.
This cathedral was consecrated in 1878 and harbors the ashes of (among other notables) General Martín Miguel de Güemes, a salteño (resident of Salta) and independence hero.
It houses 16th-century statues of the Virgin Mary and the Cristo del Milagro, which were washed ashore when the Spanish ship transporting them sank.
Walking inside, I felt the atmosphere was so peaceful. I was in awe of its magnificent frescoes and impressive stained-glass windows.
It's been a national monument since 1942, and looks spectacular when it's illuminated after dark.
