The basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière is the symbol of the religious history of Lyon and is one of the three most visited places in the city. After laying the foundations in 1872, the construction of the basilica lasted 24 years. The four crenellated octagonal towers, 48 meters high, represent the cardinal virtues. The two towers on the facade of the building represent Fortitude and Justice, while those on the courtyard are Prudence and Temperance. From the top of Temperance, after climbing 287 steps, visitors can admire a 360° panorama of Lyon and the Alps. The interior of the basilica is divided into three large naves and three bays with pointed vaults. The naves are surmounted by three domes in which are painted three groups of images depicting the relationship of the Virgin with the Trinity. The domes are supported by 16 polychrome columns resting on Carrara marble pedestals in groups of two. The ensemble is completed by six magnificent mosaics that decorate the walls and by a large symphonic organ.
