Sounion is a coastal resort located on the southern coast of Attica, Greece, about 40 km south of Marathon and 69 km southeast of Athens. Its main attraction is the Temple of Poseidon, an ancient Greek temple located on a rocky promontory overlooking the Aegean Sea.The Temple of Poseidon at Sounion is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece and is one of the best-preserved temples of ancient Greece. It was built in 444 BC and was dedicated to the god of the sea, Poseidon. It was built in a panoramic position, right on top of the Sounion promontory, offering breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding islands. The Temple of Poseidon has been rebuilt numerous times over the centuries, but many parts of the original building are still visible today, such as the columns, beams, and perimeter walls. You can visit the temple and walk along its ruins while admiring the view of the coastline.Besides the Temple of Poseidon, the Sounion area also offers other tourist attractions, such as secluded beaches and coves with crystal clear waters, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. There are also some taverns and restaurants on the beach where you can enjoy Greek cuisine, especially fresh fish.
