Sanctuary of Eleusis

The Sanctuary of Eleusis is an archaeological site located about 40 km northwest of Marathon in western Attica, Greece. The sanctuary is one of the most important archaeological sites of ancient Greece and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.The Sanctuary of Eleusis was dedicated to the goddess Demeter, the Greek goddess of fertility and agriculture. The site was famous for its mysteries, a series of secret initiatory rites held annually in September in which participants sought to gain secret knowledge of the cycles of nature and life after death.The shrine was built in the 6th century BC and was continuously expanded and restored until the 4th century AD. The complex included numerous buildings, including temples, initiation halls, theaters, baths and fountains.The archaeological site of Eleusis has been largely reconstructed and restored, with many well-preserved structures. One of the highlights of the sanctuary is the initiation hall known as the "telesterion," where mysteries were held. The hall was a theater-like structure that could seat up to 3,000 people. Other highlights include the temple of Demeter and the temple of Kore, dedicated to Demeter's daughter Persephone.
