On Place Voltaire in Ussel, you'll see this Roman eagle sculpted in granite. It was discovered near the Moulin du Peuch in southeast Ussel. It dates back to Roman times and might have adorned a funeral monument that is lost today. Although it was found with no head, a new one was added in 1804 by a sculptor named Pic, and it was set in place to honor the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte. The eagle is a feminine noun when it is used as a symbol of the Roman and Napoleon empires.
